Some thrilling action happened over the weekend in matchday 29 of the 2022/23 Spanish La Liga with 20 goals scored across nine matches.

Only one match went goalless, and that was between league leaders Barcelona and Getafe. Barcelona made the trip to Getafe hoping to return to winning ways and keep the 13-point gap between themselves and Real Madrid but Getafe’s defensive discipline made sure the Catalan giants score no goal in the match.

This is the second successive match Barcelona have gone without scoring, having been held goalless by Girona a week ago. They won’t complain much though, as they are still 11 points clear at the top of the table.

Second-placed Real Madrid beat Cadiz 2-0 away from home to return to winning ways in the league after losing to Villareal a week ago. Two second-half goals in a space of four minutes from Nacho and Marco Asensio made sure Carlo Ancelotti’s men get all three points ahead of their Champions League quarterfinal return leg with Chelsea on Tuesday this week.

Atletico Madrid continued their great form in the league with a sixth consecutive win at the expense of relegation-threatened Almeria thanks to a brace from Antoine Griezmann.

The Frenchman now has 11 goals and eight assists in the league, making him Atletico’s top scorer at this stage of the competition. Diego Simeone’s man are firmly in third, two points behind city rivals Real Madrid.

At the bottom end of the table, all the bottom five clubs Elche, Espanyol, Valencia, Almeria, and Cadiz lost over the weekend to further put the possibility of keeping their La Liga status next season in jeopardy.

Here are the full results:

Rayo Vallecano 2-1 Osasuna

Villarreal 1-2 Valladolid

Athletic Club 2-0 Real Sociedad

Real Betis 3-1 Espanyol

Cádiz 0-2 Real Madrid

Girona 2-0 Elche

Getafe 0- 0 Barcelona

Atlético Madrid 2-1 Almería

Valencia 0-2 Sevilla

Celta Vigo are playing Real Mallorca tonight to round up this matchday.
