Matchday five of the Spanish La Liga 2023/24 season produced some magic and upsets over the weekend.
League leaders Real Madrid came from behind to beat Real Sociedad 2-1 at Santiago Bernabeu. Los Blancos conceded an early goal from Sociedad’s Ander Barrenetxea in the 5th minute of the game and went into the half-time break on the losing end.
However, they got the equalizer one minute after the restart and took the lead 15 minutes later through Federico Valverde and Joselu respectively. Real Madrid now have five wins in five.
The biggest winners of the weekend were Barcelona, who put five past Real Betis and managed to keep a clean sheet as well. Goals from João Félix, Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres, Raphinha, and João Cancelo helped the Catalan giants overcome Real Betis and move to second on the table.
Sevilla also recorded a 1-0 win over Las Palmas, their first this season. Dodi Lukebakio struck in the 71st minute to help his team move from the bottom of the table to 17th. The 2022/24 Europa League winners would like to build on this win going forward.
The biggest upset of the matchday was when Atletico Madrid fell to the hot plate at Mestala Stadium against Valencia, losing 3-0. This was Atletico Madrid’s first loss of the season but Diego Simeone’s men will find consolation in the fact that they have a game in hand.
