Matchday 28 of La Liga provided some thrilling encounters and results that were shocking and interesting at the same time as they put gave some teams an advantage over others.

A thrilling encounter between Sevilla and Celta Vigo opened the weekend with a 2-all draw that included two Sevilla players getting sent off (Pape Gueye 19′, Marcos Acuña 90+5′) and a Celta Vigo stoppage-time equalizer. Both teams remained 13th and 10th on the table respectively.

Then Real Madrid lost to Villareal 3-2 to Valencia, a result that gave league leaders Barcelona a huge title boost even before playing. Real Madrid are still 12 points behind Barcelona who have a game in hand, while Villareal moved just four points away from a Champions League place.

After the match, Real Madrid attacker Federico Valverde punched Villareal’s Alex Baena in the face for allegedly attacking his miscarried son during an altercation in the match. Baena has since denied these allegations.

Atletico Madrid continued their brilliant run of form with yet another convincing 2-1 win over 10-men Rayo Vellacano to move in just two points behind second-placed Real Madrid. Diego Simeone’s man have now won eight of the last 10 La Liga matches and have lost none in the same number of matches.

Barcelona are playing Girona tonight at the Nou Camp and a win will take them to 15 points clear at the top of the table, a gap that will pretty much make Barcelona league winners in just four more matches.

At the other end of the table, none of the bottom four clubs managed to win a match. Only Real Valladolid managed a draw over Real Mallorca with Elche, Espanyol, and Valencia all losing.

Here are the full results
