Real Mallorca have beaten Real Madrid 1-0 at the Son Moix this afternoon, a win that means so much for them, and dents Real Madrid’s title hopes.
Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti highlighted how this was an important match for them just before going for the Club World Cup, but his players didn’t show much desire to win it on the pitch.
Mallorca got the three points but the achievement can’t be attributed to their firepower because it was an own goal by Real defender Jose Ignacio Fernandez Iglesias popularly known as Nacho in the 13th minute.
After going behind, Real Madrid came to Mallorca with all the energy they had but Mallorca was equal to the challenge and were able to shut Ancelotti’s men out the entire match.
Madrid had the chance to equalize when they were awarded a penalty in the 33rd minute but Marco Asensio’s effort was saved by Mallorca’s goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic.
The Los Blancos continued to dominate the match in possession (74%), passes (627), and 12 corners but none of this was able to break Mallorca’s defensive block.
The loss now means that Real Madrid have missed the chance to cut the points gap between them and league leaders Barcelona to two, and if the Catalans win their match against Sevilla later tonight, they will go eight points clear at the top of the table.
Mallorca have now extended their unbeaten run at home to five matches.
