Liverpool’s first win in all competitions since thrashing Manchester United 7-0 last month came in yet another devastating manner for the opponents as the Kops battered Leeds 6-1 at the Elland road, and now Jurgen Klopp says the game was their ‘best’ played this season.
The Kops’ attack was at full stretch at Elland road on Monday night. Both Mo Salah and Diogo Jota notched braces while Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo each scored one.
It was the fourth time Klopp’s team was scoring in cricket scores this season- following their 9-0 win over Bournemouth, 7-0 win against bitter rivals Manchester United, and a 7-1 win over Rangers in the Champions League- but not any of that, Klopp termed this win as their best of the season.
“It was the best game we played this season, from many different aspects,” Klopp told SkySports after the game.
“Controlling the game, we caused a lot of mistakes from Leeds. Sensational goals. We counter-pressed the best we have [since] long ago. In the 92nd minute, we lose the ball and four players chase the ball. It was outstanding and exactly what we wanted.
“I can’t explain why our counter-pressing has not been there as we’ve been asking for it but tonight it clicked.”
The German tactician admitted he has no idea where his team will end up finishing this season, but insisted they need these kind of performances to build on something new.
“Where will we end up, I don’t know. But it will go on after the season. That’s why we need all the results and performances to build on and understand, so we can build something new, something slightly different.
“If we can’t get anything this season, then we have to build on good performances. I’m thinking like that instead of thinking where we will end up. I have no clue if we can get close but it’s not too important. I would like to see us with the same desire, passion and understanding that we showed tonight. It’s our job to find that consistency.”
Despite the huge victory, Liverpool stayed eighth in the Premier League table, nine points behind Newcastle who are placed fourth in the table standings, with eight games left to the end of the season.
