Inter Miami manager Tata Martino has confirmed that Lionel Messi will be named the official club captain.
29-year-old Brazilian midfielder Gregore de Magalhães da Silva had been Inter Miami’s long-term captain but is currently out with a long-term injury.
Messi took the captain’s armband off DeAndre Yedlin when he came on as a substitute during his debut match against Cruz Azul last week on Saturday. He scored a spectacular free kick in stoppage time, helping his team earn a win for the first time since May
Martino also said that the Argentine, along with Sergio Busquets will most likely make their first start for the club against Atlanta United.
This League’s Cup match will be played tomorrow, Wednesday, July 26 at the DRV PNK Stadium in Miami, Florida.
Messi completed his move to Inter Miami earlier this month and signed a contract for two-and-a-half seasons, with an option to extend for a further year in the 2026 season.
The 36-year-old chose the move to the U.S. after his exit from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) despite interest from former club Barcelona and the oiled Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.
