Liverpool have reached an agreement with Brighton and Hove Albion to sign midfielder Moises Caicedo for a British record transfer fee of £110 million.
Brighton on Thursday made a decision to sell Caicedo to the highest bidder and Liverpool’s bid for the player was higher than long-time admirers Chelsea, which stood at £100 million.
Chelsea had been trying to sign Caicedo since January this year and talks over the 21-year-old’s transfer intensified after the summer transfer window opened.
However, Chelsea failed to meet Brighton’s valuation of the player and saw two of their bids rejected as soon as they were submitted until they have now completely missed out on him.
Caicedo, who had repeatedly made it clear he wanted to leave Brighton, had already accepted personal terms with Chelsea but since he is now headed to the red side of Merseyside, he will have to negotiate again. His medical test is expected to be conducted today ahead of his official unveiling over the weekend.
Liverpool have been in search of a new defensive midfielder after the departure of Fabinho and Naby Keita and have been in talks with Southampton over Romeo Lavia. Since Southampton’s asking price looked high in the eyes of Liverpool, they opted for Caicedo and they seem likely to land on their man.
£110 million will shatter two records. The record for the most expensive Premier League player was briefly held by Arsenal’s Declan Rice at £105 million, and Liverpool’s most expensive player was defender Virgil van Dijk at £75 million.
