Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag has admitted that his side is overly reliant on Marcus Rashford for goals.
Ten Hag’s team had gone three games without seeing the back of the net, but on Wednesday in their game against Brentford, it was Rashford who netted the lone goal as United got their revenge against Thomas Frank’s team.
The goal- Rashford’s 15th in the Premier League this season, and his 28th overall was one that returned the Red Devils into the top four above Tottenham who have played a game more. Speaking to the media after the game, Ten Hag, when asked whether his team is more reliant on the England international for goals said;
“Yes, it’s the truth. He is very good. But we can talk almost every game about it and when he is not in the game, like Sunday, it is no good for us.
“But we know other players can score as well. Bruno [Fernandes] can score as well. We have many more players across the squad who can score.”
Since the return of club football following the conclusion of the World Cup in December last year, only Victor Osimhen in Europe’s top five leagues has scored more goals that Rashford. The 25-year-old has now scored a club-record 10 winning goals in the league this season which takes him level with club legend Wayne Rooney who did it in the 2009/10 season.
He has also scored 19 goals at Old Trafford this term, the most by a United player since Rooney with the same in the 2011/12 campaign.
“Everyone is clear that we are not going to play our best every week, but there is never a time to drop our standards and we have to keep trying to push each other.” Rashford said after the game.
United will need their academy graduate to continue with his scoring exploits as the race for Champions League qualification is getting hotter each passing day.
Following their 2-0 loss to Newcastle last weekend, Man United had slipped out of the top four for the first time since December, but that victory saw them dislodge manager-less Tottenham from the fourth position.
They are now level on points (53) with Eddie Howie’s team who sit third, but just three points ahead of Spurs seated fifth.
