Last season’s UEFA Champions League winners Manchester City beat Europa League winners Sevilla 5-4 on penalties to win the first UEFA Super Cup title in their history.
The 90 minutes ended in a one-all draw. Sevilla got the lead through a Youssef En-Nesyri’s headed goal in the 25th minute after Marcos Acuna swung in an inviting cross from the left wing.
En-Nesyri had two other chances to extend Sevilla’s lead but he squandered them, although credit also has to go to Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Santana who was equal to the challenges and ensure the match doesn’t go out of his club’s grasp.
The first half ended with Sevilla in the lead thanks to their defensive discipline that kept Manchester City’s attacks at bay, especially cutting off supply to dangerman Erling Haaland. As expected, Man City enjoyed the biggest percentage of ball possession.
In the second half, City were more direct and determined to get the equaliser, and their efforts paid off in the 63rd minute when Cole Palmer headed home Rodri’s deft ball into the box.
The next minutes were more about finding the winner for City while Sevilla concentrated on defending pushing the match into a penalty shootout.
In the intense shootout, all Man City players scored their spot kicks and it was the same story for Sevilla until Nemanja Gudelj stepped up to take the fifth! The Serbian midfielder crashed his spot kick against the crossbar and gifted City the victory.
Sevilla have now lost six UEFA Super Cup matches, while Manchester City add the first to their trophy cabinet.
