Manchester United are on the brink of exiting the UEFA Champions League after they twice surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Galatasaray in Istanbul.
Erik ten Hag’s squad aimed for a crucial win at Galatasaray’s Rams Park to keep their hopes alive for a second-place finish in Group A. The intense atmosphere created by the home fans added to the challenge.
Despite the deafening noise, United started strongly, scoring in the 11th minute. Bruno Fernandes, in collaboration with Rasmus Hojlund, set up Alejandro Garnacho for a remarkable goal, his second in two games.
The visitors continued their dominance, with Fernandes adding another sublime goal in the 18th minute, silencing the home crowd
However, Galatasaray responded, and Hakim Ziyech’s clinical free-kick midway the opening half narrowed the gap.
A disallowed goal for offside spared United from a Copenhagen-style collapse, giving them a halftime lead, a first in this UCL campaign.
Galatasaray came flying out for the second half, and almost restored parity immediately, but Kaan Ayhan found the side netting from his attempt.
In response, United broke forward and got their third through Scott McTominay, who prodded home in the box following Aaron Wan-Bissaka pass.
Having held a two-goals lead, United looked in control, but were soon pegged back yet again. This time, Onana was to blame as he flicked Ziyech’s into his own net to gift Galatasaray a goal.
Moments later, Galatasaray equalised after Ziyech brilliantly picked out Kerem Akturkoglu, who controlled the ball well to lash past Onana from a tight angle and send the home crowd into bedlam.
In the later exchanges of the game, both sides went all in search of a winning goal but neither found it.
United now cling to UCL hopes, relying on favorable results and a victory against Bayern Munich, while Galatasaray only needs to beat Copenhagen to progress.
