Marco Asensio has decided to leave Real Madrid and join French giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) as a free agent at the end of this season.
Asensio’s contract with Real Madrid expires on June 30 this year and talks for an extension have totally broken down.
The player already has a long-term agreement in place with PSG. In the contract, PSG are expected to pay Asensio up to £8.5 million per year in salary and bonuses.
The Spaniard has not yet signed this contract but he is expected to do so after Real Madrid’s final game of the season against Athletic Bilbao this Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu.
According to The Athletic, the 27-year-old was also a target for Premier League club Aston Villa with an even bigger paycheck but PSG have won this race, especially because of the promise of Champions League football.
Asensio joined Real Madrid from Real Mallorca in 2014 and has made 286 appearances, scored 61 goals, and assisted 32 in all competitions. During this time, he has won 17 major trophies: three Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles, four Club World Cups, three European Super Cups, three Spanish Super Cups and one Copa del Rey.
With Karim Benzema said to be to leaving at the end of the season as well, Real Madrid’s attacking options will be reduced and are will be left with Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Siva de Goes, the injury-prone Eden Hazard, and Federico Valverde.
The club will have to reinforce their squad in the summer transfer window so they can compete favourably next season.
