Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus has announced he is stepping down as captain after five years with the armband in unusual fashion.
The German forward, who has spent 11 seasons at Dortmund was first named full-time captain for the famous Yellow and Black in 2018 ahead of the 2018/19 season.
In a video shared on social media by Dortmund, Reus declared that he would be relinquishing his leadership of the side, wishing manager Edin Terzic and director Sebastian Kehl luck in identifying his successor.
“Hello dear BVB fans, it’s very important for me to tell you something personally: I had a lot of time to think during my vacation and decided to pass on the captain’s armband.
“I informed Edin Terzic and Sebastian Kehl about this yesterday. I was allowed to wear this armband for five years with pride and honour.
“Thank you for your support over the years and I wish Edin and Sebastian that they find a very good successor – I am sure that they will be successful,” Reus said in the video.
During his 1-year stay at Borussia Dortmund, Reus has made 387 appearances, scored 161 goals and provided 121 assists in all competitions. As captain, he lifted the DFB Pokal in 2020-21 and the German Super Cup in 2019-20.
In April this year, Reus signed a one-year extension to his current contract that will keep him at the club until the end of next season.
Reus fell agonisingly short of lifting the Bundesliga title for Dortmund last season when they failed to win the last match of the season against Mainz that was needed to seal the league title.
