Marcos Alonso will stay at Barcelona this season despite the club’s failure to register him at the start of the season.
The La Liga champions are plagued with financial issues which are holding them back from registering Alonso alongside new signings Inigo Martinez and goalkeeper Inaki Pena.
According to Spanish sports news publication sport.es, the club, led by manager Xavi Hernandez have informed Alonso that he is not for sale and should not pay attention to reports linking him to other clubs as he will be registered sooner than later.
SPORT also says that Xavi wants to have two players in each position, with Alejandro Balde as the first-choice left-back. Alonso will be given opportunities throughout the season and knows his role in the team as an experienced and liked player in the dressing room.
For a couple of years now, Barcelona have had difficulties registering players and have been selling off assets (financial levers) in order to be able to do so.
They were forced to let go of Lionel Messi because of such issues. Last season, they only managed to register four of five new signings, and that was 24 hours before the campaign began.
La Liga’s strict spending rules assign each club a spending cap that applies to first-team transfers and wages, whether that be on players or wider staff.
The spending limit for each club is calculated based on financial data that every team submits sometime before the summer transfer window opens. This data includes previous profit and loss, expected income for the coming season, and savings among other factors.
Barcelona return to action in La Liga this Sunday, August 27, when they travel to Villarreal.
