2022/23 UEFA Champions League winners Manchester City will play UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night, August 16.
Both clubs are looking to win their first European trophy of the new season, or a second in a calendar year.
Sevilla, the most successful club in Europa League history with seven titles, have only won one UEFA Super Cup and that was in 2006 against Barcelona.
Manchester City, on the other hand, have never won this title, since they just won their first major European title last season against Inter Milan thanks to a Rodri strike.
When the two clubs met last season in the Champions League group stage, Manchester City found no difficulty in beating Sevilla home and away with 3-1 and 4-0 scorelines respectively.
Sevilla will have to be extra good and work harder if they want to stop the blazing-hot Citizens if the results from the last league matches are to go with.
Manchester City beat newly promoted Burnley 3-0, a club that’s managed by Pep Guardiola’s former player Vincent Kompany, while Sevilla lost 1-2 to a Valencia side that was almost relegated last season.
With this, Manchester City look heavier on the weighing scale so they are favourites, and Sevilla will come into this tie as the underdogs.
Team news
City captain Kevin De Bruyne limped off the pitch against Burnley and Guardiola said in a post-match press conference that the Belgian will be out of action for a while.
Ruben Dias (head) and Bernardo Silva (illness) are also unavailable. The good news is that John Stones is back from a hip problem and in addition to everyone else, will be available for selection.
For Sevilla, defender Tanguy Nianzou (hamstring) and Marcos “Marcao” do Nascimento Teixeira (quadriceps) are out injured. Others are available for manager Jose Luis Mendilibar to select.
