Manchester United will travel to the Turf Moore to face Burnley on Saturday evening seeking to avoid a four consecutive defeat in all competitions.
The Red Devils lost to Arsenal 3-1 before the International break, before losing to Brighton and Hove Albion by the same score line after International break. In the midweek, they fell to Bayern Munich 4-3 at Alianz Arena in the Champions League.
That poor run of form has seen them drop to the 13th position on the table standings with four games already played.
On Saturday, they face a Vincent Kompany coached side that are winless in their first three games.
Team News
Raphael Varane, Mason Mount, Sofyan Amrabat and Harry Maguire all returned to training after battling injuries, so they might feature for United at Turf Moor however, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw and Amad Diallo are still on the sidelines.
Apart from those injuries, Ten Hag will also be without Antony and Jadon Sancho, who are both absent due to personal reasons.
For Bayern, Kompany is guaranteed to be without Michael Obafemi (hamstring), Hjalmar Ekdal (knee) and Darko Churlinov (blood poisoning). While striker Lyle Foster is also out due to the straight red card he received against Nottingham Forest on Monday.
Match Stats
Manchester United have lost three Premier League games already – it’s their most defeats within the first five games of a league campaign since 1989-90 under Alex Ferguson (also three).
The last time they lost four of their first six games in a league campaign was back in 1986-87 (W1 D1 L4), a season that they ended in the 11th place.
Burnley do have a worrying record against United in the Premier League. The Clarets have won just one of their last 15 league games (D5 L9), with that win being a shock 2-0 win at Old Trafford in January 2020.
At Turf Moor, however, Burnley are without a win in seven consecutive matches versus Man Utd. They have lost five, drawn twice while scoring just once in that run.
Burnley’s only Premier League home win over the Red Devils came in August 2009, which was also their first-ever Premier League meeting. They were 1-0 victors thanks to a Robbie Blake goal in the first half.
United have a decent record against promoted opposition in the Premier League. They’ve lost just one of their last 24 games against such teams (W17 D6), going down 4-1 at Watford in November 2021- Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s last game as United boss. They’ve won the last eight of those in a row- their longest streak since a run of 12 between May 2011 and March 2013.
What the managers said
Speaking to the media on Friday, Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag said his troops have to be at their best in order to beat Burnley.
“As always, it’s about how we play against Burnley. There is never any easy games and definitely not against Burnley, we know how intense they play football, I know their approach.
“I must say, I like the approach from them, the adventure and the high intensity and also the dynamic in their game. So, yeah, we have to play out best.”
For Kompany, while speaking to the press he said;
“I have been at a big club when you lose a couple and the pressure can mount. Our focus is on the pitch. We’ve had three games against three of the top eight sides in this league.
“I’m really looking forward to this game in terms of seeing if we’ve made those steps forward and I really believe in the attacking threat we have.”
