Scott McTominay scored a brace for the second successive time as Scotland defeated Spain 2-0 to maintain their perfect start in the Euro 2024 qualifiers at the Hampden Park on Tuesday.
The game kicked off with Scotland showing tactical discipline as they exhibited a high pressing approach which frustrated the visiting side. Spain struggled to maintain their usual free passing game.
Early in the, McTominay capitalized on Pedro’s error to open the scoring in the 7th minute as the home side challenged Luis De la Fuente’s much changed side.
Having impressed in the first game against Norway when he scored twice coming off the bench ,Joselu was handed his first start, and he came close, but his header hit the cross bar Midway through the first half. Ryan Christie also fired wide when he should have scored on such a frustrating night.
McTominay grabbed his second goal in the second half following a cross from Kieran Tierney in the 51st minute, and Scotland had a chance to widen the margin, but Lyndon Dykes missed the target when his effort went over the bar when he was clear on goal.
McTominay who also scored a brace in Scotland’s 3-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday Spoke to Viaplay after the game.
“We did really,really well,” Mctomminay told Viaplay. “We knew they’d have lots of the ball, and the manager said be clinical when we had the opportunities.
“Everyone was at it, diving around, making the game slow. It’s difficult, but sometimes that’s the way it’s got to be. When you’re winning, you’ve got to do stuff like that.”
“The manager said this is chance to create legacies as Scotland Players and these are the nights in 20,30 years that people remember.”
This win was Scotland’s first against Spain since 1984, and it ensured that they top group A on six points from two games while Spain who got their first loss in a Euro qualifier since Slovakia last beat them in 2014 remain second with three points . Norway drew 1-1 with Georgia in the other group game.
