Following his comments towards match officials after Arsenal’s controversial 1-0 defeat to Newcastle on November 4, the English football governing body, the Football Association ( FA) has charged Arsenal manager Mikel Arterta.
Anthony Gordon’s second half goal ended Arsenal’s unbeaten start in the league, but it came in a contentious manner. Not only did the goal appear to have gone out of play, Joelinton appeared to have pushed Gabriel while the goal scorer seemed offside. There was a VAR check on all incidences, but VAR ruled the goal legit.
While speaking to the media after that game, a furious Arterta branded the decision not to rule out the goal an ’embarrassment and a disgrace’.
Following Arterta’s comments, Arsenal released a club statement backing their manager and reminding PGMOL ‘to address the standard of officiating’, but the Spaniard has been charged.
“Mikel Arteta has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following comments that he made in media interviews after Arsenal’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Saturday 4 November,” the FA statement said.
“It’s alleged that his comments constitute misconduct as they are insulting towards match officials and/or detrimental to the game and/or bring the game into disrepute.”
Arteta has until Nov. 21 to provide a response to the charge.
Arterta and his team return to action on Saturday, 25th November to face Brentford after the international break. Arsenal currently occupy the third position behind both Liverpool and Manchester City.
