Arsenal fans may have to wait until the summer to welcome any new signings to the club after their manager Mikel Arteta admitted it is a ‘possibility’ the club will not make any additions in January.
The Gunners are one of the teams viewed as title contenders this season given their current position in the league, but at the same time, their ability to actually win the league has been questioned due to the strength in depth of their squad.
Added to their small squad, Arsenal has crucial players currently out injured, with summer signing Jurrien Timber and Thomas Partey, the most notable ones.
But during his prematch press conference ahead of their FA Cup tie against Liverpool on Sunday, Arteta when asked by Sky Sports whether there was a chance the club could end January without any further incomings said;
“That’s a possibility. Unfortunately, Jurrien has a very long-term injury. He’s doing really well but is still far from training with the team.
“It’s what we have, with Tomi having to leave. We’re open for the transfer market, but the emphasis is of making the most of the players we have.
“We’ll work with the club to understand if there are any possibilities, and whether we have any good options. But first of all, we will focus on the players we already have.”
Arteta once mentioned that they indeed need additions to strengthen their title charge, however, now with this new information, it is likely they will not get any this season.
Arsenal currently occupy the fourth position in the league with 40 points, five behind table leaders Liverpool. The Gunners ate Christmas placed top of the table, but back to back losses to West Ham and Fulham ensured they entered the new year placed fourth.
After Liverpool, their next league game will be against another London neighbor, Crystal Palace. They will be hoping to arrest the poor run and get their title charge back on track.
