Liverpool made it four wins in five Premier League games following their 7-0 demolition of arch-rivals Manchester United at Anfield.
The Kops who endured a rough start to 2023 got their opener in the 43rd minute through the Dutch winger and no sooner had they returned from the break, than Nunez struck to extend his team’s lead.
The third, Gakpo’s second arrived in the 57th minute following Mo Salah’s twisting of Martinez before sliding it into the former PSV winger who made no mistake to calmly slot it past David de Gea.
It was clear at this moment that Liverpool were running away with this one, and indeed weren’t done yet. Salah found his goal when he volleyed past the Spaniard custodian to become the first Liverpool player in history to score in five consecutive league games against Man United. That goal also saw the Egyptian equal Robbie Fowler’s 128 Premier League goals for Liverpool.
Nunez did the honours of scoring the fifth, his second with his header following an inch perfect cross from Jordan Henderson before Salah completing his brace to become Liverpool’s all-time top goal-scorer.
Roberto Firmino joined the party. The Brazilian who is reportedly leaving the club at the end of this season made it seven to wrap up a perfect evening for the Kops.
It was the fifth successive time Liverpool were keeping a clean sheet this season. And at Anfield, Liverpool continue with their incredible home record. Prior to this game, they had only lost once in 35 top flight games at home.
The result means Jurgen Klopp’s team have now garnered 16 points from the last available 18 Infront of their home fans. And with that victory, Liverpool climb into the fifth position, now just three points behind fourth placed Tottenham, and with a game in hand.
Erik Ten Hag’s team came into this game the better side at least going by their form. The Red Devils had won each of their last four games in all competitions, and despite not beating Liverpool at Anfield since January 2016, had been expected to post a positive result.
That was not to be as they were put to the sword. United remain placed third in the table standings, but now just seven points ahead of their tormentors.
