Borussia Monchengladbach maintained their impressive record against Bayern Munich by beating the Bavarians 3-2 to move up to eighth in the Bundesliga on Saturday at the stadion inbBorussia park.
It all started going wrong for the visitors in the 9th minute when Alassane Plea ran clear on goal only to be fouled by Dayot Upamecano. The referee didn’t hesitate to give the center back his matching orders.
Gladbach went into an early lead following a free kick from Jonas Hofman who crossed for Lars Stindl at the edge of the box to unleashe a low drive that beat Yann Sommer for the opener.
Julian Naglelsmann made tactical substitutions when he brought on Joao Cancelo for Thomas Muller.
Alphonso Davies then burst down the left flank before cutting back a low cross for Erik Maxim Choupo-Moting to level the score 1-1 in the 34th minute.
M’gladbach continued to raid the Bavarians and they proved to be dangerous on the break . It was then Manu Kone who almost restored the lead but was denied by Sommer following a tremendous effort that thwarted out for a fruitless corner kick.
At the stroke of the halftime break, Bayern nearly got the lead but erratic shooting cost them that chance .
Shortly after the interval, the hosts restored their lead when Hofman picked a through pass before squaring the ball for on running Plea to connect perfectly into the back of the net for the Gladbach’s second.
The hosts ran riot over Bayern but lacked the sharpness to punish the ten man champions.
Davies had an opportunity to equalize but his effort missed the target narrowly
It was then in the 83rd minute that substitute Marcus Thuram stretched the lead following Delay Blind’s through pass to Hofman who squared the ball for Thuram to score the third.
However Julian Naglelsmann’s men who knew that this wasn’t a good hunting ground for them showed determination to go down fighting and they got the second goal in the 92nd minute to narrow the margin 3-2 through Tel who struck from close range following a cross from Lainer .
However Thuram got the opportunity to burry the game beyond reach but his effort sailed over the cross bar and the scoreline stayed 3-2.
Bayern could surrender the top spot to Union Berlin if they beat bottom placed Shalke O4.
