Napoli won their third Scudetto, and their first in 33 years, on Thursday after a 1-1 draw away to Udinese.
The draw ended the club’s long wait for the title since Argentine great Diego Maradona guided them to two championships in 1986-87 and 1989-90.
A second-half goal from Victor Osimhen gave Napoli the Scudetto with five games left to the end of the season.
Napoli dominated the league for much of the season, producing the best and most spectacular football by far, led by Osimhen and Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. They have lost just three league games all season.
Luciano Spalletti’s men also looked capable of going the distance in the Champions League before a surprising 2-1 defeat on aggregate to AC Milan in the quarterfinals.
Udinese midfielder Sandi Lovric had cooled the spirits of over 11,000 Napoli travelling fans when she scored the opening goal after 13 minutes, with a well-placed shot that found the top right corner of the box.
After that goal, Napoli increased the pressure in attack. In the 53rd minute, Osimhen stepped up and scored the equalizer which sparked the wild celebrations from Napoli’s fans who already knew a point would be enough for them to win the league.
At the final whistle, Napoli supporters ran onto the pitch to celebrate the historic occasion alongside the players.
Speaking after the match, an emotional Osimhen expressed his delight after helping his team win the Scudetto after three decades.
“It’s an incredible emotion. We have waited many years for this moment, and being able to give the Neapolitans the Scudetto is something we will never forget. We were the underdogs at the beginning of the season. Not many believed in us and many gave us up.” Osimhen told sports streaming outlet DAZN.
The Nigerian international has been in blistering form for Napoli this season, scoring 22 goals and assisting four in 27 Serie A matches, and he is on course to become the first African player to win the Italian Serie A golden boot.
