Newcastle moved into the third place following their 2-0 win over Manchester United at St. James Park on Sunday.
Newcastle who lost 2-0 to Erik Ten Hag’s men in the EFL Cup final started the game on the front foot, and their persistence and discipline paid off as they found their revenge.
Lisandro Martinez was forced into a fine block from a Sean Longstaff effort after being set up by Alexander Isak in the 7th minute. The Magpies almost got a breakthrough nine minutes later but a double save by David De Gea kept the home side at bay.
Longstaff was at it again, but he headed wide his effort following Allan Saint Maximin’s setup in the 20th minute. Newcastle looked more promising of the two ides, and Jacob Murphy fired over the bar from the edge of the box.
In the 37th minute Newcastle was inches away from opening the scores following Longstaff’s long range effort that missed the target.
The visiting side tried to come back into the game when Antony set up Diogo Dalot with a clever dummy, but the Portuguese defender laid a low cross that sailed away as Marcus Rashford could not get at the end of it in the 38th minute.
Newcastle missed another glorious opportunity when they should have scored, but Joe Wilock shot over the bar following a clever cut back pass by Allan Saint Maximin with five minutes remaining to halftime.
Manchester United still had a moment to break the deadlock, but Antony’s volleyed effort went off target following a corner kick delivery from Luke Shaw before the game went into the halftime break.
After the interval, Allan Saint Maximin kept Dalot very busy as he outsmarted him with some good footwork before laying a dangerous cross but Scott McTminay was in position to intercept it for a fruitless corner kick.
Three minutes later, Fabian Schar fired a tremendous effort that almost hit the target as De Gea was beaten but Willock who broke the deadlock following a cut back header assist that he connected from close range in the 64th minute.
De Gea put up a decent display making some brilliant saves but Newcastle was simply better on the night as they wrapped up the win with an 87th minute strike from substitute Callum Wilson who headed home the second to seal the victory in style as they displaced Manchester United from the third position in the table standings.
