Newcastle United have completed the signing of Italy and AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali
The 23-year old joins the Magpies on a five-year employment contract until 2028 for a reportedly £55m fee.
He becomes Eddie Howe’s first signing of the summer as they prepare to play in the UEFA Champions League this coming season.
“I want to repay the trust on the pitch, giving it my all, as I always have. I’m really excited about playing at St. James’ Park, I can’t wait to feel the warmth of the fans.” Tonali told the Newcastle United website following the announcement.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praises the player’s attributes saying; “He is an exceptional talent and has the mentality, physicality and technical attributes to be a great fit for us,”
He went on to add that; “At 23, Sandro already has important experience as a key player in one of Europe’s top leagues and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his country.
“But he also has the opportunity and potential to grow and evolve with us, and I’m excited to add him to our squad as we approach the exciting season ahead.”
The 23-year old joins Newcastle after having made 130 appearances for AC Milan across three years. In that period, he has scored seven goals and helped Milan win the Serie A in 2021/22 season.
He was also part of the AC Milan side which reached last season’s UEFA Champions League semi-finals, only to be defeated by rivals Inter Milan.
Before Tonali joined Milan, he had played for Brescia and helped them gain promotion to Seria A in the 2018/19 season
The midfielder who can play both deep and more advanced in the midfield is already capped 14 times with the Italian National Team.
At Newcastle, he is expected to compete for starting spot with Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff, Joelinto and Elliot Anderson.
