PSG star Neymar Santos has been at the receiving end of abuse on and off the pitch from a section of disgruntled the club fans several times during his five-year stay at the French club.
Joining PSG from Barcelona in a then world-record transfer fee in upwards of £200 million in the summer of 2017, Neymar has enjoyed domestic success and registered staggering stats but some fans feel he has not done enough for the club, especially when it comes to bringing home European glory through the Champions League.
A few days ago, these disgruntled fans gathered at Neymar’s house in Paris and chanted that he leaves their club. In response, the Brazilian playmaker went on to photo-and-video-sharing site Instagram and liked a post that labeled PSG “a small club.” Neymar’s “like” disappeared a few moments later but fans with sharp eyes and fast fingers caught it.
Published in Portuguese by Ofuiclear, an account that focuses on Brazilian football players, the translated post in question read: “The difference between being great and having greatness! PSG has lacked and is lacking; its fans have lacked and are lacking! Having history is not optional, position yourself as great and having the attitude of greatness is within reach! They are used to small.”
Injuries notwithstanding, Neymar has been in great form this season, scoring 18 goals and assisting 17 times in just 29 games in all competitions. Even though some PSG fans seem to be “sick” of Neymar, if he’s not sold, he will be at the club until his contract expires in 2025.
