Mauricio Pochettino couldn’t hide his delight after Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Brighton on Wednesday that saw the Blues progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
After going three games goalless and winless, Nicholas Jackson’s strike early in the second half helped Chelsea return to winning ways and consequently advance to the next round where they will face Blackburn Rovers.
Pochettino now believes this victory can be a ‘momentum builder’ ahead of his side’s tricky period.
“It was a good response from the team; I’m very pleased with the performance again,” Pochettino said after the game.
“I’m happy for the victory and I think it’s important to go through in the competition, build our trust and the momentum. Hopefully, we can take this momentum into the future.
“Of course, the uncertainty and sometimes the pressure to win means not to be perfect in our positions [on the pitch]. But I think in the second half we dominated the game and fully deserved the victory.”
Chelsea could have won this game by a much wider margin, but Jackson had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside just few moments after he’d scored, while Bart Verbruggen was also brilliant in the Brighton goal to deny the Blues several times.
The Blues will now return to action on Monday when they travel to Fulham in the West London derby in the Premier League.
