Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, who doubles as his agent has met with Barcelona chiefs to discuss what has been reported as a possible return for the Argentine talisman to Spain.
Messi left Barcelona in the summer of 2021 for Paris Saint-Germaine (PSG) as the club was struggling to meet his wage demands.
The 35-year-old’s contract with PSG expires at the end of this season and there has been speculation about his future. A number of clubs that Messi the World Cup winner could go to after PSG have been named like David Beckham’s Inter Miami in the USA, Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, and a return to his boyhood club Barcelona.
According to Catalunya Radio in Barcelona, Spain, Messi’s dad met with Barcelona President Joan Laporta and the meeting went well with more meetings between the two parties expected to take place in the near future as the star’s possible return to Spain is still far from being confirmed.
Almost everyone at Barcelona would love to see Messi make an emotional return and club president Laporta is no different.
For us, he is the best player of all time, we have had him here and I am convinced that in his heart he is a Cule and will always be linked to Barca. Whether or not he comes back as a player, at the moment he is at PSG and we would very much love him to come back one day, but we’ll see.
Laporta told Catalunya Radio, adding that they don’t want to put the fan’s expectations high since the Argentine is currently a PSG player.
Messi, who’s arguably the greatest football player of all time has been exceptional this season. He won the World Cup in Qatar in December 2022 and has thus far scored 11 goals and assisted 10 in the French Ligue 1 for PSG.
He’s also scored four goals in the Champions League as the club tries to go as far into the competition as possible. It is because of this that PSG are keen on extending his contract.
Jorge Messi is going to be a busy man in the coming months as he tries to weigh the best option for his son next season; between staying at PSG, returning to Barcelona, going to the US or the oil-rich Saudi Arabia where his biggest competitor of the last 15 years or so Cristiano Ronaldo is currently plying his trade from.
