The writing was already on the wall and it was just a matter of time before Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) part ways with head coach Christophe Galtier.
The French giants have announced that they have reached an agreement to terminate Galtier’s contract. He was in charge for just one year but managed to guide PSG to the Ligue 1 title, the Trophee des Champions last season.
In a statement published on PSG’s official website on Wednesday morning, the club thanked Galtier for his services and wished him the best in the future.
“The club would like to pay tribute to his professionalism and commitment, which helped the Rouge et Bleu win a historic eleventh French Championship title and a Trophee des Champions.
“The entire Paris Saint-Germain team would like to thank Christophe Galtier, as well as his assistants Thierry Oleksiak and Joao Sacramento, for their professionalism and commitment throughout the season, and wish them all the best for the rest of their careers,” PSG’s statement reads in part.
Galtier was appointed PSG head coach last year in July, replacing now-Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino. Prior to his appointment, Galtier was coaching Nice, with whom now he is involved in a legal battle over racism and discrimination.
An investigation was launched into Galtier’s time at Nice where he is alleged to have sent an email to the club’s top bosses complaining about the club having “too many blacks and Muslim players.”
The investigations led to Galtier getting arrested later last week for questioning, and the prosecution set December 15, 2023, as the trial date for his charges.
PSG have been interviewing potential Galtier replacements for the past few months and reports suggest that former Spain manager Luis Enrique is in pole position to become their next head coach.
