Former Bayern Munich defender Markus Babbel has put a twist to the sacking of Julian Naglesmann by the Bundesliga record winners Bayern.
Bayern yesterday confirmed that they had part ways with Nagelsmanm citing non-developmental plans from him, but Babbel has now come out to claim that the Bavarians were actually not happy with the 35-year-old’s personal relationship.
Nagelsmanm is dating a former journalist at German newspaper BILD, and this was seen as big problem at the club.
When the two began dating, Lena Wurzenberger, stopped covering Bayern Munich. She then had to quit her job at the company, but despite all this, Babbel claims that there were still trust issues at the club due to the relationship.
“I know that Nagelsmann’s relationship with a BILD reporter was a huge topic in the dressing room. It didn’t go down well at all that he was with her. His girlfriend was therefore a big problem for Bayern.
“There was a lack of trust because some players just weren’t able to communicate what they were thinking anymore. Because they were afraid that everything would end up in the newspaper.” Babbel revealed while speaking to Blick.
Nagelsmanm was sacked with Bayern second in the Bundesliga, just a point behind leaders Dortmund. He was appointed Bayern manager in 2021, and during that time, he won one Bundesliga title, two German Super Cups, and had Bayern win eight out of eight games in the Champions League this season.
He will be succeeded by former Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel who starts his work on Monday as Bayern prepare to face Dortmund over the weekend.
