AS Roma head coach Jose Mourinho has tendered in his resignation from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) football board.
In a letter addressed to UEFA, Mourinho said that the conditions which he believed in when he joined Europe’s football governing body are no longer standing.
The decision comes just a day after the Portuguese tactician received a four-match touchline ban from UEFA due to his conduct against referee Anthony Taylor after losing the Europa League final to Sevilla early this month.
“In thanking you for the invitation you extended to me to be a member of the UEFA football board, I regret to inform you that, effective immediately, I will be renouncing my participation in this group.
“The conditions which I so strongly believed in when I joined are no longer standing and I felt the obligation to take this decision. I kindly ask that you also communicate my decision to the President Mr. Aleksander Ceferin.” Mourinho’s letter to UEFA Chief of Football Zvonimir Boban, who is chair of the board, reads.
UEFA’s four-match ban of Mourinho is a result of charges for using insulting/abusive language against a match official, as the Roma boss was quoted as saying “Congratulations, you f***ing disgrace” to Taylor in the car park after the match.
This was in protest of some on-field decisions the English referee made that Mourinho wasn’t so pleased with. Taylor and his family received abuse in the form of insults and items thrown at them by a section of Roma fans as they made their way to and through Budapest Airport in Romania after the match.
