Scott McTominay’s double secured a 2-1 victory for Manchester United over Chelsea in the Premier League, making it the Blues’ 11th consecutive match without a win at Old Trafford since May 2013.
Despite recent criticism prompting United to exclude four news outlets from their pre-game press conference, Erik ten Hag’s side began brightly. They earned an early penalty when Enzo Fernández fouled Antony, but Robert Sánchez saved Bruno Fernandes’ spot-kick.
The breakthrough came in the 19th minute when McTominay clinically finished after Marc Cucurella blocked Harry Maguire’s initial attempt.
A brief stoppage occurred due to a technical issue for linesman Simon Bennett, but the action resumed with Sánchez making a crucial double save to deny McTominay.
On the other end, Andre Onana was brilliant to deny Nicholas Jackson also when Chelsea beat the United’s offside trap.
Cole Palmer, a lifelong United fan, silenced Old Trafford by sliding the ball into the bottom corner just before halftime.
Both teams adjusted their defensive lines at halftime, introducing more discipline. Despite chances for Jackson and Garnacho, McTominay nodded home from Garnacho’s cross, securing his fifth goal in eight PL matches. Although he missed a chance for a hat-trick few minutes later.
Chelsea also levelled matters in the later exchanges of the game but Armando Broja hit the woodwork for United to end a two-game winless streak, securing their first victory against a top-10 side in the PL this season.
In contrast, Chelsea has lost two of their last three and still hasn’t won consecutive league games this season.
In the next games, United will take on Bournemouth at Old Trafford while Chelsea will be away to Everton
