SSC Napoli FC have taken the Italian Serie A this season by storm.
Having finished last season in third place and losing three key players in Kalidou Koulibaly, Dries Mertens, and Lorenzo Insigne in the summer transfer window, it is only fair to say that no one saw this top performance coming.
Napoli are now 18 points clear at the top of the table after matchday 24 thanks to a 2-0 win against Empoli over the weekend and Inter Milan’s 1-0 loss to Bologna. Napoli are now just nine wins away from winning the first league title in 33 years.
Here are some of the records Napoli have smashed so far this season.
Points
With 65 points from 24 games so far, Napoli are the runaway leaders in Serie A this season. Only Inter Milan (2006/07) and Juventus (2018/19) have won more points than Napoli at this stage of the season with both teams winning 66 points after matchday 24. Napoli have also won more points in Europe’s top leagues after 24 matches.
Points gap
The 18 point difference between Napoli and Inter Milan in second place make the biggest gap between leader and second in Serie A history since 1981 when a win started being awarded three points.
The second biggest gap was in the 2006/07 season when Inter Milan was 17 points clear of second-placed AS Roma.
Goals
You cannot be on top of the league if you are not scoring. Since the season began, Napoli have been scoring for fun (and business, of course), netting 58 goals. No club has scored more at this stage in this Serie A season. Napoli’s goal tally is more than what the bottom three Serie A clubs combined (Cremonese, Sampdoria, Verona) have scored so far.
When it comes to goal difference, it gets even more interesting. Napoli has a goal difference of 43 thanks to their solid defence and that has let in only 15 goals. No club in Europe’s top five leagues has a superior goal difference than Napoli.
More about goals, Napoli are about to produce the first African Serie A golden boot winner in Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian forward has been exceptional this season, scoring 19 goals in 20 matches. He has also assisted three goals. Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez is second with 13 goals.
Champions League
Napoli are not only smashing it at home in Italy, but they have also been brilliant in Europe. Luciano Spalletti’s men have been brilliant in the Champions League this season, as they topped their Champions League group that had Liverpool, Ajax, and Rangers. They scored 20 goals in six matches, more than any other club managed in the Champions League this season. This includes a 4-1 triumph over Liverpool and a 6-1 thrashing of Ajax in the Netherlands. No Italian club has scored more goals in an away match in the Champions League.
The league is still on, and Napoli could smash more records. We will be there to bring them to you no matter what.
