Southampton have sacked manager Nathan Jones after just three months at the club. Jones replaced Ralph Hasenhuttl who was sacked in November just before the World Cup in Qatar.
This was Jones’ first managerial position at a Premier League club and his lack of experience is partly why things didn’t go well for himat St Mary’s. He lost seven of the eight Premier League matches he oversaw, with yesterday’s loss to 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers being the last stroke into his bosses’ decision to show him the exit.
The only positives of his reign were when he guided Southampton to the Carabao semi-final before being eliminated by Newcastle United, the win at Everton in the Premier League last month, and progressing to the fifth round of the FA cup a few weeks ago.
Southampton’s poor run mounted much pressure on Jones, with fans on social media and inside St Mary’s stadium calling for his sacking. After the loss yesterday, he went straight down the tunnel, skipping the now-popular gesture of clapping for the fans in the stadium after the game.
During the post-match address, the now-former Southampton boss said his team “should have won against Wolves,” according to Sky Sports. Jones left Southampton bottom of the Premier League table with 15 points.
Southampton have announced that first-team lead coach Ruben Selles will take over on an interim basis as the club embark on the task of searching for Jones’ replacement.
