Manchester United ended their six year wait for silverware after defeating Newcastle 2-0 to lift the Carabao Cup on Sunday at Wembley Stadium thanks to goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford.
The Red Devils who last won a major trophy in 2017 can now smile as they attained their first trophy under Erik Ten Hag who the club and the fans are certain will land them more success.
The game kicked off with both sides deploying a cautious approach but its Manchester United who made the statement of their ambitions clear when Casemiro broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute with a well executed header from Luke Shaw’s delivery following a foul on Rashford on the left.
Moments later, Rashford’s deflected effort off Sven Botman doubled the lead for Ten Hag’s men. Wout Weghorst almost put his name on the scoresheet, but his long range effort from 20 yards was kept out by Loris Karius who was playing his first competitive game since 2021.
After recess, Antony fired perfectly but Karius was in the right place to condense his effort.
Newcastle also got some threatening moments when Allan Saint-Maximin beat his marker before delivering a low cross, but David de Gea rose to the challenge to cut out the effort.
Rashford then had his effort kept out by the German custodian in the 71st minute, and Marcel Sabitzer shot wide a few moments later.
Manchester United controlled the game with Casemiro and Fred displaying a solid performance to keep Miguel Almiron quiet while Lisandro Martinez and Rafael Varane were outstanding on the night shutting out Newcastle’s attacks.
The Old Trafford outfit held on to win 2-0 hence ending their six year trophy drought. Newcastle’s long wait continues.
