With Harry Maguire’s future at United still unclear, Erik Ten Hag has expressed willingness to keep defender Jonny Evans at the club for a much longer while than expected.
Evans made a return to United in July, and signed a short-term deal in order to participate in pre-season after his contact with Leicester had expired.
But according to Ten Hag, the Red Devils have started talks with the Northern Ireland international about extending his stay.
Harry Maguire’s situation doesn’t affect it,” Ten Hag told journalists on Friday “We will see what happens. We are in talks and when we have news we will bring that, as always. For this month, Jonny is under contract.”
“Yeah, otherwise we wouldn’t be talking.” Ten Hag added on if he would like Evans to remain at the club.
After impressing in pre-season, Manchester United could offer veteran defender Evans a one-year deal according to multiple sources.
Evans came through United’s academy and made almost 200 appearances for the first team before leaving to join West Bromwich Albion in 2015.
In his nine years at Old Trafford, the center back won three Premier League titles and the Champions League to become one of United’s successful academy products.
If Evans is handed a new contract, he will have to battle with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire for a starting spot in the Red Devil’s team which will also play in the UEFA Champions League this season.
