Following the death of Sir Bobby Charlton a few hours to Manchester United’s game, Erik Ten Hag says his side had to show respect to the fallen United legend by beating Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday evening.
With score levelled at 1-all, Diogo Dalot scored with 13 minutes left on the clock to fire United past Sheffield, and show respect to Charlton who had breathed his last earlier on in the day aged 86.
“Very sad, our thoughts are with his family, especially his wife, his children and grandchildren.” Ten Hag told BBC Sport after the game at Bramall Lane.
“What he achieved in football was immense. Also his personality off the pitch. The football world lost a big man.
“We had to show our respect for him and I think we did that today. We wanted to celebrate but also to remember him.”
Charlton played 758 games and scored 249 goals during 17 years as a Manchester United player. In that period, he won the European Cup, three league titles and the FA Cup.He also won the FIFA World Cup with England in 1966 in some of his 106 caps.
United’s next Premier League game will be against city rivals Manchester City at the Etihad next weekend.
They currently sit eight on the log with 15 points garnered in their opening nine games.
