The clash between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield ended in a goalless draw on Sunday, proving to be a frustrating outcome for Liverpool, currently sitting in 2nd place in the league table.
In the aftermath, Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk seized the opportunity to take a dig at their rivals.
Despite the game ending in a stalemate, Liverpool dominated in key areas. With a total of 34 shots compared to United’s meager 6.
Jurgen Klopp’s side showcased their attacking prowess but struggled to convert chances. They also maintained higher possession and executed more successful passes throughout the game, yet the coveted three points eluded them.
In a post-match interview, Van Dijk expressed his disappointment with the outcome and emphasized Liverpool’s superiority on the field, delivering a subtle jab at the Red Devils.
“There was only one team trying to win the game but unfortunately it did not happen,” said Van Dijk
The Dutch defender made it clear that he firmly believed his team was the better side of the game.
“We were superior in all aspects, they were hoping to hurt us on the counter and they are buzzing with a point.”
Van Dijk, who had a first half header saved by Andre Onana, is sure Liverpool have picked up some lessons from this disappointing draw
“Obviously, they are not in the best phase. Coming here you are wary of the threat we have. We should have won it today. We have to learn from certain situations, and I know we will.”
The Dutch defender and Liverpool will return to action on Wednesday when they host West Ham in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal. West Ham eliminated Arsenal from this prestigious tournament in the previous round.
