After their Champions League exit that came in the round of 16, Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has come out to say that his team lack a foundation to be competitive and win trophies.
Spurs’ latest disappointment came on Wednesday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where they drew goalless with AC Milan in their second leg of the last 16 in the Champions League.
The side failed to utilize a few chances they created, and subsequently, were dumped out of Europe’s most prestigious competition on a 1-0 aggregate. As a result Conte who only returned to training with the team on Monday after recovering from a gallbladder surgery echoed his thoughts about his team.
“The situation is really clear. It’s one year and two months since I started, I always say the same thing, we need time and patience. At this moment, we don’t have a solid foundation to be competitive and win. We try to work and get the right players to get the right foundation and try to find the solution in the transfer market for the right team.
“I’m really sorry for the fans. We cannot invent the win or wait for a miracle one day for a trophy. You have to build and have patience. I understand the fans don’t have patience because for a long time Tottenham have not been winning. What I can promise is my team will work really hard for this club and try to improve.”
The last time Tottenham won a trophy was in 2008 when they beat Chelsea 2-1 in extra time to win the Carabao Cup. It doesn’t seem like that long wait will end anytime soon. This season, they are already out of all domestic cups and realistically, can not win the Premier League.
Qualifying for the Champions League has always been regarded as success for the north London side, but that is also likely to elude them this season.
They sit fourth in the table standings, but just three points ahead of resurgent Liverpool. With their kind of form that has been inconsistent, there’s a huge possiblity they could miss out on the Champions League next season.
