Former Manchester United and Ajax goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar is in intensive care after suffering brain bleed while on holiday in Croatia.
This was confirmed by both Ajax and United in statements released on their platforms.
“On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain,” Ajax said in a statement on Twitter. “He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition. Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”
In a statement, Manchester United said: “Sending all our love and strength to you, Edwin.”
In May, Van der Sar resigned from his role as Ajax Chief Executive after the club finished third in the Dutch league and failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Before becoming the club’s chief executive in 2016, he had worked on the Ajax Board for four years.
He retired from playing football in 2011 after having made 266 appearances for the Red Devils. In those appearances, he helped them win three Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League ( which he also lifted for Ajax in 1995)
Apart from United and Ajax, the 52-year old played also for Fulham and Seria A’s Juventus
We wish a quick recovery to Van der Sar 🙏
