Liverpool make the trip to Molineux Stadium for the early kickoff fixture against Wolves as the Premier League returns after the international break.
The Reds come into this match oozing with confidence after winning three consecutive matches that have elevated them to third position in the league, level on 10 points with four other clubs.
Wolves, on the other hand, are languishing in the 16th position after collecting just one win from four matches.
Both clubs want the three points from this match as Wolves want to return to winning ways and move further up the table, while a win for Liverpool will take them to the top of the table at least momentarily as both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur play later in the evening.
When the two clubs met on this ground last season, Wolves beat Liverpool 3-0, ending a run of six consecutive home league defeats against the Reds. They last won consecutive home games against them between February 1980 and August 1981.
However, Liverpool have a stronger head-to-head record, having won 12 of their last 13 Premier League games against Wolves.
Even so, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes this is going to be a tough match. While talking to the media in a pre-match press conference, Klopp said that Wolves have quality players that make a good team.
“[..] You look at the line-up and think, ‘Wow, that’s real quality.’ Players like Hwang and Kalajdzic don’t even start, they still have Neto and other guys, so it’s a really, really good football team and that’s the team we prepare for,” Klopp told reporters.
He added: “We are unlucky obviously now early in the season already with decisions, which happens to all of us but not all these decisions lead directly to a bad result – in their case I think it was like that. We expect a massive fight and that’s what we have to be ready for.”
Team news
Tommy Doyle is a doubt for this fixture as he awaits an assessment of his fitness following a minor knee issue. Midfielder Joe Hodge is ruled out completely due to a hamstring injury.
Liverpool are without Trent Alexander-Arnold due to the hamstring issue he picked up in the win over Aston Villa. The same is true for team captain Virgil Van Dijk who is suspended. Thiago Alcantara reportedly has a hip problem too.
The good news is that Ibrahima Konate has returned to training and joins other players who are available for selection.
