Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has undergone surgery after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament during pre-season training at Cobham.
This is a huge blow to Mauricio Pochettino’s plan for the coming season as the 22-year old was set to play an important role under him after the departure of Kalidou Koulibaly.
Fofana didn’t travel with the Blues for their tour of the United States due to a specialist medical assessments to his knee.
A club statement read: “Defender Wesley Fofana has undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery.
“The 22-year-old did not travel to America for the club’s pre-season tour due to specialist medical assessments, which unfortunately confirmed that an operation would be required.
“Wesley will now begin his recovery and work with the club’s medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.”
It’s not the first time the Frenchman has had issues with his knee as he missed several months of last season after injuring himself in October. He recovered to make a return to training, but suffered a setback which kept him out for a further two months.
Due to that, he was only restricted to 15 appearances in the Premier League in his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge following his £70 million move from Leicester City.
Before joining Chelsea, Fofana had earlier suffered several problems with his knee at Saint-Etienne and Leicester.
