Yesterday when Sweden took to the pitch to face Belgium in their opening game of the 2024 Euro Qualifiers, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was hailed for becoming the oldest player to take part in a European Qualifier, at 41 years.
But it turned out that he was actually not because on the same night, Gibraltar was facing Greece and Lee Casciaro was on for the latter. At 41 years and 176 days, it was confirmed that Casciaro is the oldest.
This leaves Ibrahimovic who came on as a substitute as Sweden lost 3-0 to Belgium as the second oldest (41 and 172 days).
Former Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff had held that record for over three decades, but he is now the third oldest at 41 and 90 days.
Ibrahimovic still has something to be happy about though. He last week set a record in the Italian Serie A when he became the oldest player to score a goal in top flight.
The Swedish forward looks fresh while playing which gives the impression that he is going to break more records. The 41-year-old insists that he wants to represent his country at the Euro finals next year, but that’s of course if they manage to make it the finals.
Sweden kicked off the campaign on a losing end falling to Romelu Lukaku’s Belgium . The Inter Milan forward claimed a hat-trick against the Swedes scoring in the 35th,49th and 82nd minute to give Domenico Tedesco a perfect start on his first game since taking over as head coach.
